Women and PrEP
HIV is not just a male issue. In 2023, women made up about 19% of new HIV diagnoses, and 84% of new diagnoses among women are attributed to heterosexual contact. Yet, women access PrEP at rates ten times lower than men.
HIV affects women of color disproportionately. Despite only being 13% of the female population, Black/African American women account for 50% of new diagnoses, having the highest HIV diagnosis rate amongst women.
PrEP is a critical HIV prevention option for all women, regardless of their sexual orientation, providing powerful protection and a way to defend their autonomy. PrEP can reduce the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% and from injection drug use by at least 74% when taken consistently.
Ladies, it’s time to step up and PrEP up! You can help bridge the gap by empowering yourself and others to take control of their sexual health. Together, we can end the HIV epidemic.
