August 20 is Southern HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (SHAAD)!
The Southern United States, particularly the “Deep South” — Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas — experiences a higher burden of HIV and lower PrEP uptake compared to other regions in the country.
While the South only makes up about 38% of the United States population, in 2022, it accounted for over 52% of all new HIV diagnoses. That’s more than half of all HIV diagnoses!
SHAAD is a chance to share vital education and resources for HIV testing, prevention, and treatment with citizens of the South and find ways to reduce — and eventually end — HIV stigma.
This year for SHAAD, we’re partnering with Berean Christian Church in Snellville to offer HIV education, rapid testing, self-test kits, condoms, and linkage to PrEP and other HIV-related care.
